Influenza Studies Coordinator
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Since its foundation in 1998 Sustainable Sciences Institute has facilitated more than 100 comprehensive scientific workshops, trained nearly 2,000 public health professionals in 29 countries around the world. Over 100 publications in acclaimed scientific journals have directly resulted from SSI mentorships and programs. Launched in 2007, SSI’s Influenza Program currently runs three studies that provide invaluable information about the spread of influenza and other respiratory illnesses within Nicaragua, as well as key insights into clinical presentation and immune responses of children infected with the influenza virus.
POSITION OBJECTIVES:
Participate in the design and implementation of influenza studies in Managua Nicaragua.
Ensure study implementation matches design.
Work closely with local Site Coordinators, Principal Investigators, and administrative staff.
Work closely with Principal Investigators and study staff in the United States.
Ensure accurate reporting of different studies, as required.
Participate in the development of scientific papers, documents, and articles.
Ensure fluid communication among team members and manage staff according to SSI principles.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:
Create and review SOPs with various coordinators.
Work closely with informatics team to ensure accurate data collection and storage.
Supervise study personnel to ensure the correct implementation of study protocols.
Work closely with quality control officials to guarantee that study personnel comply with protocols.
Work closely with study staff, PIs, Finance and accounting team, to develop accurate reports of study activities as required by financing institutions.
Compile data and prepare reports as needed.
Coordinate sample shipments with laboratory teams in Nicaragua and The United States.
Review each document used in the study including the following: protocols, consent letters, data collection forms, surveys.
Work with purchasing and logistics officer to ensure the accurate purchasing of study supplies.
Attend, participate in, and present at technical meetings.
Lead and support your work team in the implementation of new ideas that benefit the studies.
Manage workflow at various sites.
Contribute to other studies and in other areas as needed.
EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. MPH, MSc., MD or related degree
2. English and Spanish fluency
3. Experience with statistics and/or working with data
4. Study design and implementation experience
5. Critical thinking
6. Academic research a plus
7. Clinical and/or laboratory experience a plus
8. NIH grant experience
9. Computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
10. Strong verbal and written communication skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIORNMENTAL FACTORS:
1. Work is typically performed in a traditional office setting. Occasional time in laboratory, clinical, and fieldwork settings will be required.
2. Exposure to bodily fluids is possible.
3. Regular and extended use of a computer is necessary.
4. Occasionally work outside of normal hours is required including nights and weekends.
5. Occasional travel may be required.
