Who are you? Founded in 1998, the Sustainable Sciences Institute (SSI) is an international non-profit organization that works to improve public health in developing countries by building local capacity for scientific research on infectious diseases.
What is your mission? It is our mission to ‘develop scientific research capacity in areas with pressing public health problems.’ We have built our mission around the understanding that developing country scientists and health workers have the ability – and the responsibility – to confront and manage infectious diseases in their countries but lack the necessary skills and tools to do so.
What do you do? We help biomedical scientists in the developing world gain access to training, funding, information, equipment, and supplies, so that they can better meet the public health needs of their communities.
Whom do you serve? We serve biomedical scientists and health workers in the developing world (mainly Latin America and Africa).
Where do you work? While we would like to work wherever our help is needed, so far we’ve held workshops in Latin America (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela) and Africa (Burkina Faso, Egypt, and Namibia). Our main office is located in San Francisco. We also have offices in Managua, Nicaragua and Cairo, Egypt and support Centers of Excellence in Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Peru.
